Top 5 Medical Issues from Season Three of House

By Rachel Thomas, About.com

House and his team have solved many fascinating medical cases and season three was no exception. Find out what we think are the top five medical cases from season three of House.

1. Abducted by Aliens?

When seven-year-old Clancy is admitted with rectal bleeding, he tells the team that aliens have abducted him. Once the team discovers a metal device in the back of his neck, they begin to think outside the box and also begin to wonder if the boy is telling the truth. In the end, House figures out Clancy has chimerism.

2. Death by Fetus

A pregnant photographer named Emma Sloan is put into the care of the team when it appears that her unborn baby is killing her as each of her major organs begin to shut down. During an exploratory surgery, House shares an unusual tender moment with the unborn baby when he grabs House's finger. The team discovers that lesions on the lungs of the baby are causing the mother's health issues. Months later, we see that baby and mother are fine and healthy.

3. Another Dr. Crabby Pants?

It appears as if Dr. Crabby Pants has met his match when 16-year-old Nathan Harrison is admitted into the care of the team. Nathan seems to be a much younger and much ruder version of House, so the team naturally believes the boy may be suffering from a chemical imbalance. As more alarming symptoms begin appearing, House realizes the patient is suffering from a disease called haemochromatosis.

4. House Gets Morbid

In one of the most intense episodes of season three, House has his hands full with yet another complicated case and a detective breathing down his neck. With his mind on his legal troubles, House finds he is off his game when dealing with the case of a suicidal morbidly obese man. From diabetes to an STD, as the symptoms turn out to be dead ends and the man breaks the MRI machine (due to his weight), House finally realizes the man is suffering from terminal lung cancer and will get his wish to die. House may want to join him when he learns what lays ahead in a legal sense.

5. No Pain, No Cain

House is free of pain and free of the cane in the season three premiere and he is ready to take on any case. He takes on the case of Richard McNeil, who was left paralyzed after brain cancer surgery several years ago. After the man drives his wheelchair into a swimming pool, everyone thinks he is suicidal, but House knows better and orders life-threatening tests. After pushing Cuddy and his team to the limit, House is removed from the case after diagnosing Richard with Addison's disease. Unbeknownst to House, Cuddy administers the cortisol he recommended and it works -- but nobody bothers to let Dr. Crabby Pants in on the cure, chalking it up to what Cuddy calls "A lesson in humility."
